Winter can be tough on your van. Cold weather, icy roads, and salt on the streets can cause damage to your vehicle without you even noticing. As spring approaches, it’s important to check your van and make sure it’s ready for the months ahead. Regular maintenance not only keeps you safe but also helps avoid costly repairs.

Here’s a simple guide to the most important vehicle checks you should do after winter.

1. Check Your Tyres

Cold weather can cause tyres to lose pressure. Driving with low tyre pressure can lead to more fuel use and faster tyre wear.

  • Check tyre pressure: Look in your van’s manual or on the driver’s door frame for the correct pressure.
  • Inspect tyre tread: The legal minimum tread depth in the UK is 1.6mm, but for safety, aim for at least 3mm.
  • Look for damage: Check for cracks, bulges, or nails stuck in the tyre.

If your tyres are worn or damaged, replace them before they cause problems on the road.

2. Inspect Your Brakes

Brakes work harder in winter because of slippery roads. Spring is a good time to make sure they’re still in top condition.

  • Listen for noise: Squeaking or grinding sounds can mean worn brake pads.
  • Check brake fluid: Low fluid can reduce braking power. Top it up if needed.
  • Test braking: If your van pulls to one side when braking, get it checked by a mechanic.

3. Wash Off Winter Salt

During winter, roads are often treated with salt to prevent ice. While it helps with safety, salt can damage your van by causing rust.

  • Give your van a deep clean: Pay special attention to the wheel arches, undercarriage, and lower body panels.
  • Check for rust: Look for small brown spots on the bodywork and under the van. Treat rust early to prevent it from spreading.

4. Top Up Fluids

Cold weather can lower your van’s fluid levels. Check and top up the following:

  • Engine oil: Keep it at the right level for smooth engine performance.
  • Coolant/antifreeze: This prevents your engine from overheating in warm weather.
  • Windscreen wash: Spring often brings more bugs and dirt, so keep your washer fluid full.

5. Check the Battery

Cold weather can weaken your van’s battery. If your van was slow to start during winter, it might be time for a new one.

  • Look for corrosion: White or green build-up around the battery terminals can cause problems.
  • Test the battery: Most garages can quickly check battery health for free or at a low cost.

6. Inspect Lights and Wipers

Spring means longer days, but you’ll still need your lights in the early mornings and evenings.

  • Check all lights: Headlights, brake lights, indicators, and reversing lights should all work properly.
  • Replace worn wipers: Winter can damage rubber blades. If they leave streaks, swap them for new ones.

7. Look Under the Van

Snow, ice, and potholes can damage the underside of your van.

  • Check for leaks: Look for any fluid dripping when the van is parked.
  • Inspect the exhaust: Make sure it’s secure and not rusty.

8. Book a Spring Service

If you’re not confident checking everything yourself, booking a spring service with a local garage is a smart move. They’ll inspect your van and catch any problems early.

Taking the time to check your van after winter will keep you safe, reduce running costs, and prevent breakdowns. By looking after your vehicle now, you’ll be ready for a busy spring and summer of deliveries. Stay safe, stay prepared!
