It may only just be August, but Christmas is coming fast, and if you’re a self-employed delivery driver, you know what that means. More packages, longer hours, but also the chance to make extra money.

Drivers who thrive during peak season aren’t necessarily the ones who run the fastest or carry the most. They’re the ones who plan ahead and avoid the chaos that can trip everyone else up.

So, why not plan early and get ready to hit the ground running?

Your Van is Your Livelihood – Treat It That Way

Nothing kills your earning potential faster than a breakdown, especially during peak season, and you don’t want to be that driver stuck on the side of the road losing your key asset to earning money.

Why not schedule your van service now, before November arrives and things start to ramp up? While you’re at it, get your tyres and brakes checked. With heavier loads and potentially icy roads, you need at least 3mm of tread depth and brakes that can endure the constant stopping and starting that comes with delivering parcels.

Don’t forget the boring stuff either. Top up your screen wash with a proper winter mix, check that your heater works, and ensure all your lights function properly. There’s nothing worse than realising your brake lights are out when you’re already halfway through your route.

And don’t forget to check your breakdown cover – that it covers commercial driving and your policy is up to date. Paying for an unexpected roadside recovery is not how you want to spend your Christmas earnings.

Build An Emergency Kit

During the busy peak season, you want to be ready for anything. You’re going to face situations where a simple problem can derail your entire day. But having the right gear means you can sort it out and keep moving.

Keep a decent phone charger and power bank in your van at all times. Your phone is your lifeline – without it, you can’t navigate, communicate with customers, or even prove you made deliveries. A hands-free mount isn’t just convenient; it’s essential for safety.

For mechanical issues, make sure you have the basics on hand. A tyre pump and puncture repair foam can help you get moving again quickly. A small toolkit and some spare bulbs will help you handle any minor problems yourself.

Weather gear is a must. Keep a proper waterproof hi-vis jacket in your van – many delivery areas require it anyway. Consider adding waterproof gloves, a woolly hat, and an umbrella. You’ll get wet, cold, and tired, but the right gear makes it bearable.

A small torch or headlamp is also worth its weight in gold when you’re trying to find house numbers on unlit streets or navigating apartment blocks first thing on a dark morning.

Dress for Comfort

You’re going to be walking miles every day, lifting constantly, and dealing with whatever weather December throws at you. The wrong clothes can make every shift miserable.

Layers are your friend. Begin with a breathable layer against your skin, then add a fleece or light jumper, and finally, your outer jacket. That way, you can adjust as you warm up from all the walking and lifting, but you won’t freeze when you first step out of the van.

Your feet will thank you for investing in proper footwear with good grip and ankle support. You’ll be surprised how much walking you actually do, and wet feet will ruin your day faster than almost anything else.

Keep spare socks and gloves in your glove compartment. The first time you step in a puddle or your gloves get soaked, you’ll be grateful for the backup pair.

The Bottom Line For Peak Season Success

Peak season is also a peak season for you. The money available, including any bonuses from your DSP, is there for you to maximise if you want it, but only if you can stay on the road, stay comfortable, and avoid as many issues as possible.

Start preparing now. Your van, your gear, and your bank account will all thank you when December hits and you’re managing your deliveries comfortably, while other drivers may be struggling with breakdowns, soggy feet, and dead phone batteries.

Peak season doesn’t need to be a nightmare. With the proper preparation, it could be the most profitable time of your year.
