Thinking about switching to a different Delivery Service Partner (DSP) in the UK? You’re not alone. With dozens of DSPs operating across the country, finding the right one can significantly impact your work experience, earnings, and job satisfaction. And, although earnings are essential for a consistent income, the day rates on offer do not tell the whole story.

The foundation of any good DSP relationship starts with fair pay for the work you do. But you must look beyond the headline hourly rate and examine the complete package. Some DSPs offer guaranteed daily minimums regardless of how quickly you finish your route, while others stick to strict hourly pay. Some will lure you in with great day rates that seem high, but will drop you like a brick as soon as the rush of Peak or Prime is over.

Some DSPs also provide fuel allowances if you’re using your own vehicle, which can add up to significant savings over time, so watch out for this too.

The Value Of Management and Culture

Time and time again, we are told that the quality of management will make or break the experience of a driver who leaves, or stays for a long time, with a DSP.

Look for DSPs that communicate clearly, provide proper training for new drivers, and treat performance management as a learning experience rather than punishment. A supportive management team will also back you up when dealing with difficult delivery situations or customer complaints.

Usually, you can tell if a DSP has a good management structure based on the attitude of the Onsite Manager (OSM). These are the people at the depot day in and day out who are there to keep the drivers happy. They are often a good reflection of the business as a whole.

Speak with other current drivers of DSPs about their experiences. Online reviews on platforms like Indeed or Glassdoor can provide valuable insights, but remember to look for general patterns rather than isolated complaints.

The best DSPs typically have higher driver retention rates, invest in people and training to manage each depot. They also maintain realistic expectations and foster a positive team culture with regular conversations between the entire team.

Taking time to research DSPs properly now can save you from another job search later, and keep you busy all year round, not just when the demand is high.
